Q: What if I am injured in a car accident caused by someone who doesn't have insurance or has minimal insurance?
A: Thankfully, you may still be able to recover damages. Many auto insurance policies include uninsured motorist ("UM") coverage and/or underinsured motorist ("UIM") coverage. If you are injured by someone who has no insurance - or if you were hurt in a hit-and-run - you may be able to pursue a claim for damages against your insurance company pursuant to your "UM" coverage. If you are hurt by someone who has minimal insurance coverage, you may be able to make a "UIM" claim with your insurance company and seek recovery in addition to what is paid by the insurance carrier for the at-fault party.
